  • Misti Washington Gourd & Basketry Guild
Formed to preserve, promote and perpetuate the appreciation of gourd and basket art by providing a supportive, sharing and educational environment. Misti Washington was a well-known author, basket maker and a talented and generous teacher. She was one of the originators of natural basketry in Southern California and an inspiration for many of today's artisans and teachers.
Meetings take place at the beautiful Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas, California, the first Sunday of each month from Noon to 3:30. (From I-5, exit east on Encinitas Blvd. Turn left onto Quail Gardens Dr.)
During even numbered months, a potluck lunch precedes a business meeting. Members bring something to work on, a show-and-tell item and/or a problem piece to discuss. Slide presentations or demonstrations may also occur.
The first Sunday of odd numbered months an informal session is held. A mini-workshop or educational lecture (generally at no charge) may take place. Those who do not wish to participate in these bring a project to work on. Everyone exchanges ideas and gets to know one another.
Members represent all levels of interest in basket and gourd making. There are beginners, full- and part-time professionals, hobbyists and collectors. But all share a common fascination for these natural objects.
The Guild organizes a biennial weekend event at Quail Botanical Gardens during the odd-numbered years in May. Over 30 gourd and basket workshops, along with displays and botanical tours, inspire hundreds of students and visitors and renew appreciation of this ancient art form.
Membership includes a quarterly newsletter; access to Guild library books, magazines and slides; attendance at monthly meetings; participation in mini-workshops and lectures; and eligibility to register for special one- and two-day workshops conducted by nationally-known teachers held throughout the year.

They are not a teaching guild per se. That is, they would like the members to have a basic knowledge of weaving when they join as the guild does not have the resources at this time or teachers that can do that. But all the members are more then happy to share their experience by offering their knowledge when they weave baskets at the meetings.
