Construction has been almost constant on I-78 and the traffic can be backed up for miles. These are good alternative routes if you need to bypass I-78. Please read this information when traveling from the East or West. See below for the interstate and directions from other areas.
Old Route 22 runs parallel to I-78. You can see I-78 almost all the entire time.

TRAVELING FROM THE EAST: Watch for Exit 49 - it will be after you have come through Allentown. This is Route 100 (2 exits) - take the FIRST exit for Route 100 North. At the end of the exit ramp, move immediately to the left lane and proceed to the first stop light (less than 1/4 mile - you can see it from the exit). Turn LEFT at the light (this is Old Route 22). Stay on this road for approximately 14 miles. When you get to a flashing light continue to the next stop sign (another 5 miles) in Lenhartsville. This will be a 3 way stop sign with a hardware store on your left and a hotel "Deutsch Eck" on your right. Make a RIGHT hand turn. You will go under I-78 and proceed 4 miles to an intersection with a gas staion on your right. Turn LEFT onto Hawk Mt. Road and follow the brown and white "The Country Seat" signs (go 1.2 miles, turn RIGHT, go PAST the church, turn LEFT on the first black-top road, proceed past the red barn, turn RIGHT onto the black-top driveway and drive up the hill to the large red building).

TRAVELING FROM THE WEST: Take Exit 23, Shartelsville - turn RIGHT and proceed to stop sign. Turn LEFT onto Old Route 22. Follow Old 22 through Shartlesville (stay to the left at the Y) and Hamburg. A long decline will take you into the town of Lenhartsville. This will be a 3 way stop sign with a hardware store on your right and a hotel "Deutsch Eck" on your catty-corner left. Make a LEFT hand turn.
